Turlock’s semi-professional soccer organization will be hosting tryouts for their men’s and women’s teams for the 2024 season.
Academica Soccer Club will be holding open tryouts for their men’s squad from noon to 2 p.m. on Feb. 24 and 25. Their women’s team will host their own tryouts at the same time on March 30. There is a $50 registration fee for the men's tryouts, while the women’s tryouts are free. Both will take place at Academica Fields on 1343 W. Greenway Ave. in Turlock.
The men’s tryouts will be used to assess local talent for their United Soccer League League 2 squad as well as their new U23 Academy team. After Saturday's session, selected players will be asked to return for Sunday's session for further evaluation. Players must be 15 years of age or older to participate. Meanwhile, the women’s single-day tryout session will be used to add to the organization’s USL W League team. The club explained that the tryout is supplemental to their current recruiting efforts and is open to all elite high school, club, collegiate and post-collegiate players.
In their inaugural season in the USL W League under former head coach James Burns, the Academica ladies played to a 2-9-1 for seventh place in the eight-team NorCal division. Academica and Burns parted ways in July, and Trisha Gonzales has since taken over.
As for the Academica men’s team, they finished their inaugural USL League 2 season last year with a 4-7-1 record, fielding 13 points to put them in sixth place in the seven-team NorCal division.
Spots for each tryout are limited. Players interested can register at www.academicasc.com/page/show/8396167-tryouts. Those who register should bring soccer gear, including appropriate footwear, shin guards and water bottles. Players are also encouraged to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to start time to check in and warm up.
