A Turlock man is facing criminal charges after having the misfortune of attempting to break into a vehicle in front of several off-duty police officers.

Gary Reinhardt, 21, was arrested and booked for auto burglary Monday, the Turlock Police Department reported.

Shortly before noon Monday Reinhardt was seen by off-duty officers breaking into a car parked in the 100 block of S. Broadway. The officers radioed in Reinhardt’s description and location and he was taken into custody a short time later, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis.

Lewis said Reinhardt gained entry into the vehicle, but no items were reported missing.

Reinhardt’s arrest on Monday was not his first run-in with police officers recently. On July 17 he was arrested in the 100 block of W. Main Street for petty theft and a misdemeanor drug warrant.
