A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery after he allegedly stole the belongings of a friend who had just given him a ride from Sacramento to Turlock, the Turlock Police Department reported.

Matthew Adams and his friend had just arrived in Turlock around 12:30 a.m. Monday and were in the 2900 block of Colorado Avenue when Adams took her backpack and purse and started running off, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis.

The friend chased after Adams, catching up with him and fighting to get her belongings back, Lewis said.

The woman was successful in getting her belongings back, and Adams fled the scene empty-handed.

The woman contacted the police department and they found Adams on Hedstrom Road.

He was booked into Stanislaus County Jail on a charge of petty theft, according to jail records. He is being held in custody in lieu of a $2,000 bail.
