A 47-year-old man was killed while riding his bicycle across Lander Avenue in Turlock on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Robert Costner, 47, of Turlock.

Around 11 p.m. Wednesday the Turlock Police Department was notified of a collision involving a bicyclist and one vehicle on Lander Avenue. The first emergency responders found Costner mortally injured and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Turlock Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team was called to process the scene and interview witnesses.

The initial investigation revealed that Costner was riding his bicycle while carrying a box and crossing Lander Avenue mid-block, south of Linwood Avenue. He rode in front of a vehicle that was southbound on Lander Avenue.

The 64-year-old male driver attempted to stop, but the bicyclist was struck.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor on the part of the driver; however, they do appear to be a factor on the part of Costner, according to the police department.

The driver stopped immediately and is cooperating with investigators.
