A collision between a car and a big rig resulted in the death of a Modesto man and the arrest of a Turlock man suspected of driving under the influence.

Jacob A. Hoggatt, 30, of Turlock was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence causing great bodily injury or death, and a for a probation violation.

The name of the deceased has not been released pending next of kin notification. He was 37 years old and was from Modesto.

The collision happened shortly before 11:30 p.m. Monday on northbound Highway 99, south of Mitchell Road.

A 2005 International big rig was in the slow lane and a 2001 Honda, driven by Hoggatt, was approaching from behind at a speed in excess of 55 miles per hour, according to the CHP.

The CHP is still trying to determine if Hoggatt was also in the third lane or if he was in the middle lane when the collision happened. The CHP stated the Honda collided with the left rear corner of the trailer, causing Hoggatt to lose control of his vehicle.

The Honda veered off the east shoulder, where it struck a cyclone fence. The vehicle continued moving across he frontage road of Rohde Road, before coming to a stop on the east shoulder of Rohde Road north of Hepburn Way, resting on its wheels and facing in a southwest direction.

Emergency medical technicians arrived at the scene and pronounced the 37-year-old deceased.

 The driver of the big rig, identified as Charles Marquardt, 64, of Sonora was not injured.

Hoggatt sustained minor injuries. He also was showing signs of being intoxicated, according to the CHP, and was placed under arrest. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center. He is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.
