After entering the large metal gate, a werewolf greets you with a howl as the sounds of terror sound around the corner. No, it’s not the beginning of a new Netflix horror show — however, Wednesday Addams does make an appearance. It’s the Vargas family’s Halloween walkthrough display.
For the past several years, the Vargas family has opened the gates to their northeast Turlock home to the community so they can enjoy all 300 of their spooky, creepy and, at times, horrifying Halloween decorations.
“I do it for the community,” said Mary Vargas. “I enjoy doing it. I started off doing it for my grandkids, and now I have my great grandkids and the community.”
Most of the 300 decorations lining the driveway and walkways in Vargas’ front yard are animatronics — moving and making noises when people walk by. The very first animatronic that Vargas bought is a creepy looking butler. She said she purchases new decorations every year and finds them at places all over the region.
It took Vargas two weeks to set everything up, with the help of Amy Verrinder. The two women built two spooky arches, set up animatronics from 2 feet tall to 20 feet and added a few dozen spider webs to really set the scene.
The community is invited to walk through the Vargas’ display from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in October. The house is located at 1525 E. Monte Vista Ave., at the corner of Berkeley Avenue and Monte Vista Avenue.
