Three children walking along a dark country road in Delhi were struck by a vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries for a young girl.

The deceased was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as 9-year-old Stephanie Sanchez-Guzman of Delhi.

The three minors were out for a walk shortly before 9 p.m. Monday in the area of Oak and Sycamore streets in Delhi, when they were struck by a 2005 Cadillac SRX, driven by Manuel Mercado, 69, of Delhi.

Merced area California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer John Patterson said that stretch of road does not have sidewalks. It is instead bordered by a soft shoulder of dirt and sand. It is also an area that is not well lit.

CHP investigators believe the three were walking on the roadway when they were hit from behind. Mercado was driving the Cadillac at an approximate speed of 30 mph, Patterson said.

Sanchez-Guzman was transported by air ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Marlene Guerrero, 12, of Delhi had moderate injuries from the collisions and was transported by ambulance to Emanuel Medical Center.

Lenny Sanchez, 13, of Delhi sustained minor injuries, but refused medical treatment, Patterson said.

CHP investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the collision and no arrest was made.

The investigation is ongoing.
