History of Business: For the past seven years the Grizzly Rock Café has had a quiet existence in town located a stone’s throw from the dynamic Monte Vista Crossings complex that draws visitors to its franchised eateries such as Red Robin, Applebee’s, and Chile’s. Popular among the local crowd, the Grizzly Rock Café has laid roots on Golden State where it has evolved from an American restaurant to an accidental concert venue.

Largely due to Turlock’s expansion and growth, the property on which the Grizzly Rock Café exists has only played host to two restaurants that have lasted more than five years of the last 10 establishments, one of which is Grizzly Rock. So what has set the Café apart from its predecessors? Owner Frank Sanders says it’s the food.

“We’re just country people doing country food, but we’ve got a huge cross section of foods,” said Sanders.

With what Sanders calls a “killer breakfast” as well as classic American cuisine such as hamburgers and freshly grilled tri tip from the barbeque corner, Grizzly Rock Café is willing to cater to its patrons’ palates.

But the food is not the only thing drawing locals to the Grizzly Rock Café as a diverse music scene of indie rock, blue grass, and jazz has drawn local bands and those traveling through the area to the restaurant. An all ages venue that offers an extensive beer selection for those of age, the Grizzly Rock Café draws a diverse cross section of people that enjoy the same things: good food and good beats.

“The music venue part was something that was proposed to me and it just sort of evolved,” said Sanders who now offers guest a large outdoor patio for music entertainment. “It’s a place for young bands to get out of the garage and we like supporting local artists. It’s become its own thing.”

Business Specialty: Omelets and chicken fried steak for breakfast; hamburgers for lunch and dinner.
