Pete-Canning
Pete Canning, 84, of Turlock, passed away on Tuesday, March 30 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Pete was a native of New Jersey and a resident of the Modesto, Ceres and Turlock areas for 82 years. He was a mechanic with Wilson Ford and Mercury, and then Dow-Hammond Trucks until his retirement. He and his wife also owned and operated Pete's Hobby Shop in downtown Modesto during the 1960s. In his earlier years, Pete became a charter member of the Century Toppers auto club in Modesto, and enjoyed automobile and boat racing. He later enjoyed model aeronautics, Nascar, fiddling music, traveling, his family and his dog Pepper.
He was a member of the Elks, SIRS and the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Pete is survived by his wife, June Canning of Turlock; sons, Michael Shively of Chico and Don L. Shively of Turlock; daughter, Sandra Shively of Turlock; grandchildren, David Shively and Kristen Souza of Turlock; and three great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at noon on April 9 in the Spring Crest Village gated community clubhouse, 3420 Spring Crest Dr., Turlock, CA. Memorial contributions may be made in Peter Canning’s name to the Salvation Army.
