History of business:

The owner of Turlock’s newest home décor shop is no stranger to the downtown core, and his second endeavor on South Center Street aims to prove the grass is greener on the other side — literally.

The bright, artificial turf-lined wall of Dezignz is hard to miss, but the eclectic pieces inside of the store match its exterior. Luis Oliveira brought his interior design haven to Turlock from Modesto out of a love for the community, he said, which he has gotten to know over the years thanks to his former downtown shop, men’s boutique Loja Do Homen.

“I love the people here,” Oliveira said. “It’s less chaotic here.”

Oliveira hopes to compliment the slower-paced lifestyle of Turlock residents with pieces they can’t find anywhere else, from luxurious seating made with authentic Italian leather to more eccentric items, like unique chandeliers and eye-catching sculptures. The modern style of products available at Dezignz cater to those who are looking for something different in their home, he said.

“In the Central Valley, there’s a niche for it — it’s not huge, but there’s definitely a niche,” Oliveira said. “The new generation likes modern, clean lines and obviously not everyone is into ‘shabby chic.’”

Oliveira personally picks pieces from markets in places like North Carolina and Las Vegas and keeps an eye out for exclusive items that can’t be found online — a crucial factor in remaining relevant as a brick and mortar location during the age of the internet. While some items may be more in price, the quality is unmatched, he said.

“The good thing about my product is that even though it is a little costly, when you get it delivered you don’t get a bag of Allen wrenches. It’s all assembled from the factory and that’s when you know you’ve got a quality piece of furniture,” he said.

Oliveira also specializes in interior design consultation and provides services to many people who purchase furniture from his store. Eventually, he plans to incorporate the fashion from the now-closed Loja Do Homen, as well as women’s styles in the shop.

Dezignz will celebrate its grand opening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, but the location’s exterior wall is already catching the eyes of passers-by.

“I’m on a side street now, and I wanted to do something drastic where it catches people’s attention,” Oliveira said. “It’s a downtown focal point; it’s already the talk of the town.”
