The Montana Park project in south Turlock is set to receive a $150,000 contribution from the county at Tuesday night’s city council meeting at city hall, 156 S. Broadway. The meeting gets underway at 6 p.m.
Stanislaus County Supervisor Vito Chiesa (District 2) identified $150,000 in Building Community Infrastructure Funds to contribute toward the project, specifically for the multi-sport courts. The council will vote whether to receive the funds, a move that is recommended by city staff.
Montana Park Phase 2, with an estimated cost of about $4.6 million that is supported through a combination of state, regional, and local grant funding, will more than double the size of the existing park and introduce recreational amenities designed to serve residents of all ages.
Located at Montana Avenue and Freitas Street, Montana Park is 1.9 acres of wide-open ground, with handful of concrete benches and a walking path that meanders around the park. Phase 2 will add another 2.6 acres, and amenities will include nine pickleball courts, two full-sized basketball courts, four half-sized basketball courts, and another area with futsal courts, a game that could best described as pick-up soccer.
Other improvements include an ADA-accessible playground with a cushioned rubber safety surfacing, outdoor fitness area, swing sets, covered seating areas, restrooms, and a 25-space parking. The park will also feature sustainable bioswale landscaping for stormwater filtration.
Funding for the project includes $2.4 million from the 2018 Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Grant Program, $435,000 secured through the Office of state Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil (R-Jackson), a nearly $59,000 grant award from Turlock Irrigation District, and the BCIF funds from the county.
The council will also receive a report from the Turlock Downtown Property Owner’s Association, describing the organization’s financial, promotional, and maintenance-related activities in the previous year.
Also on Tuesday, the Turlock Irrigation District Board of Directors will meet at 9 a.m. and will consider adopting the annual update to the Wildfire Mitigation Plan.
