A construction company working on installing water lines accidentally hit a gas pipe, prompting an evacuation of a Turlock neighborhood.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of E. Canal Drive, between N. Olive Avenue and E. Main Street, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis.

Emergency personnel from the police and fire departments evacuated the residents and businesses in the immediate area, as well as Denair Park, Lewis said.

Those with in a four block radius of the site were told to shelter in place, Lewis said.

People are advised to stay away from the area and the roads are closed in the vicinity.

PG&E was notified of the incident and expect the repairs to take about two hours. Work began around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.
