History of business:

Everyone is beautiful in their own way, but those looking to enhance their inner glow need look no further than The Beauty Bar in Turlock.

The Beauty Bar opened in February, providing local residents with a convenient way to receive quality beauty services in one convenient location. The salon/spa offers a variety of treatments, including facials, waxing, spray tanning, teeth whitening and makeup application.

Owner Destiny Grimes opened The Beauty Bar after realizing her passion for not only skincare and makeup, but also the desire to run her own business that helped both women and men feel and look their best.

“I just like making people feel good about themselves,” said Grimes.

Grimes had always done her friends’ makeup for formals and proms, and after some deliberation decided that she wanted to open her own salon/spa.

“I didn’t think it was possible at first,” said Grimes.

After receiving her esthetician license, Grimes made her dream a reality. She first opened up shop in a small room around the corner from her current location. Soon, she was helping clients left and right. The Beauty Bar is one of a small number of locations in the area to offer LED teeth whitening treatments, and Grimes considers the service to be the most popular one she offers and credits it with her business’ early success.

“Obviously you don’t know how you’re going to do at first, so I was super nervous,” said Grimes. “Then, the teeth whitening took off and now that’s what I’m mostly busy with.”

Thanks to the immediate influx of clients, Grimes was able to move The Beauty Bar to a newer, larger location on Crane Avenue. There, she has more room to provide spray tans and apply makeup, and even has two teeth whitening stations so that clients can bring a friend along.

According to Grimes, she sees far more female than male clients, except when it comes to facials.

“More and more guys are being concerned about their skin,” said Grimes. A larger amount of men are also beginning to visit Grimes for teeth whitening treatments, breaking the stereotype that beauty is just for women.

“More would probably do it if they knew that other guys did it, but I feel like they’re kind of on edge about it,” said Grimes.

Though her business has found success early on, it didn’t always come easy for Grimes. She worked her way through Paul Mitchell Beauty School while also raising her daughter, who is now two years old.

“I had her really young, and it was stressful,” said Grimes. “Most people just go to school and think that’s stressful, and then having a kid on top of it was really hard. I hope that she can look up to me and realize that hard work does pay off.”

Grimes also prides herself in being a young esthetician at just 21 years old. It is her hope that her age will inspire more young people to make appointments and begin taking care of their skin at an earlier age.

“Everyone wants to prevent aging, but it’s easier to prevent it than reverse it,” said Grimes.

At The Beauty Bar, clients can receive a customized facial for $70. Thirty minute teeth whitening sessions cost $100 and a 15 minute teeth whitening session costs $65. Makeup appointments start at $45 and spray tans cost $35. Grimes also offers microdermabrasion treatments for $45, or for $20 it can be added to a facial. A brow wax is $15 and lip waxes are $8.
