Hugh (Tom) Thomas Hoy, 87, longtime Turlock educator and community volunteer, passed away peacefully in Pacific Grove, California, on August 11, 2025.Born August 30, 1937, in Carmel to Boyd Wallace Hoy and Anne Margaret Hitchcock, Tom grew up in Pacific Grove and graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1955. A standout athlete, he earned letters in football, basketball, and baseball before continuing his education and athletics at Monterey Peninsula College and the University of Redlands. He went on to earn a B.A. in social studies, an M.A. in physical education from San José State University, and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1954 to 1963.Tom’s career in education spanned nearly 56 years, with the most enduring chapter spent in Turlock Unified School District. After early teaching and administrative positions across California, he joined Turlock schools in 1983 and served for 14 years as a junior high and elementary principal. He retired from public schools in 1997, but his passion for mentoring young people continued. From 1998 to 2015, he taught kinesiology as an adjunct professor at California State University, Stanislaus.In Turlock, Tom was deeply committed to civic and community life. He served as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, youth group advisor, church administrator, and usher. Beyond his church, he gave his time to the Exchange Club, Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Stanislaus County HIV Advisory Board, and Rotary. His leadership and service left a lasting mark on the community, where he was known as both a respected educator and a mentor.Tom and his wife, Nancy, married in 2016 and returned to their hometown of Pacific Grove in 2018. There, he continued mentoring students, assisting with athletic programs at Pacific Grove High School, and volunteering as a line coach with Monterey Peninsula College’s Lobos football program.He is survived by his wife, Nancy Williams Burton Hoy; children Thomas Marc Hoy of Tucson, Arizona, and Peggy Hoy Barrad of Elk Grove, California; four grandchildren and two great–grandchildren; and extended family. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Anna Marie Farr Melvin; his son, David (Ted) Theodore Hoy; his third wife of 31 years, Virginia Ann Weiland Hoy; and his brother, John (Jack) Melvin Hoy.A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. at the Pacific Grove Community Center.
