The Rojas sisters are back at it again.

Two of the faces of Turlock Christian golf will make a return to the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach and Del Monte golf courses on July 8-10 — an event that pairs up junior golfers with PGA Champions Tour players. Both Kathleen and Esther Rojas participated in the same competition two years ago, with qualification not just about golf skills.

Turlock Christian coach Jeff Cederlind said the tournament “looks at the overall person and their life skills,” adding that the girls had to write essays for consideration. “More than just the golf skills, that’s how they qualify.”

First Tee Open will have 78 junior golfers paired with 78 professionals. A press release states the tournament “gives young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship.”

This is just one of many activities for the Rojas sisters, especially Kathleen. She will play in Monday and Tuesday’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links in Oregon, a USGA event she qualified for after shooting a 74 at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.

In the fall, Kathleen will begin playing for the San Jose State women’s golf team and Esther will continue with her career at Turlock Christian.

“It is an eye-opening experience, a positive experience,” Cederlind said about the First Tee Open. “They’re really happy they made it again this year.”
