Three children and their babysitter were hit by a car while crossing W. Main Street at the West Avenue crosswalk just before 6 p.m. tonight.

The children, who were estimated to be between 3 and 5 years old, were all in a stroller being pushed by their babysitter, a woman in her 20s according to Turlock Police Lt. Ron Reid, when a car traveling west on W. Main Street hit them.

According to Reid, a witness to the collision followed the car until police arrived. Police are still investigating why the elderly driver did not stop for the pedestrians or pull over after the collision.

The babysitter was transported to the hospital with a head injury. One child suffered a minor injury to his mouth in the collision that "looks worse than it was," according to Reid.

Westbound lanes of W. Main Street were closed for about an hour and half following the accident.
