Denair man stabs to death stepfather

A family fight in Denair Thursday night took a deadly turn and ended with a man dead of a stab wound and his stepson facing a murder charge.

The deceased was identified by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department as Greg Schaefer, 56, of Denair.

Jason Schaefer, 36, of Denair was arrested and charged with homicide for the death of his stepfather. Schaefer also was charged with battery on a peace officer causing injury after he allegedly became combative when being booked into the jail facility.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to a family dispute in the 2800 block of Marazan Street in Denair. The reporting party indicated that one person had been stabbed during the fight, and deputies learned that both the suspect and the victim were still inside the home.

The first deputy arrived on scene and the suspect, later identified as, Jason Schaefer, exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

While being booked at the jail, Jason Schaefer became combative and assaulted several deputies causing minor injuries.

Both the wife of the victim and his stepdaughter were at the home at the time of the stabbing.

Greg Schaefer’s Facebook page states he was a machinist at Industrial Electrical in Modesto.

Jason Schaefer is being held at the Stanislaus County Jail without bail. As of Friday, an arraignment had not been scheduled. The sheriff’s department stated a booking photo was not available.
