Two young children were rescued from a smoke filled apartment after allegedly being left home alone by their mother Monday.

The mother of the 4-year-old and 18-month-old, identified as Jessica Segovia, 29, of Turlock was charged with felony child neglect.

The discovery of the children was made Monday evening after the 4-year-old attempted to cook a corndog in a microwave, which resulted in the Minnesota Avenue apartment filling with smoke.

The apartment manager saw the smoke and rescued the two children from the apartment before the Turlock Fire Department’s arrival.

The fire department notified the police department about the children being left home alone. According to the police department the two children had been alone in the apartment for an extended time period.

Neither child was injured. Both were taken into the custody of Child Protective Services.

Segovia is currently out on bail and has a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.
