TPD crime scene

The Turlock Police Department is seeking a suspect who tried to burn an occupied house down by opening the propane tanks and striking a match.

The effort from the Feb. 25 incident was unsuccessful, but police have identified a person of interest in the case, though they are not releasing his name at this time.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m. Feb. 25, the Turlock Fire Department was dispatched to the 100 block of W. Syracuse Avenue after residents noticed the smell of propane.

According to the police report, the suspect, who was known to at least one person in the house, was angry and threatened to burn the house down.

The suspect gained access to a nearby propane business and opened more than 10 250 gallon propane tanks, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis.

The suspect did try to light some matches, but nothing ignited.

The suspect had fled the area before police arrived.
