The remains of two people were discovered inside a burned car Monday morning in an orchard located east of Denair.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Department has opened a homicide investigation into the death of the two individuals. The cause of death for the two individuals has not been released.

The charred four-door sedan was found by farmers around 10 a.m. Monday in an orchard off East Monte Vista Avenue, just east of Bledsoe Road and near the Merced and Stanislaus county lines.

The car was no longer on fire when it was discovered, according to the sheriff’s department.

Initially detectives believed the remains belonged to one individual, but later discovered two people had been burned inside the car.

Investigators are looking at missing persons reports and will be using dental records to try and identify the individuals found in the car.

No motive or suspects in the case have been identified by the sheriff’s department.
