A Turlock man was hospitalized with injuries he sustained in a crash in an attempt to avoid arrest for stalking his ex-girlfriend.

The man, identified as Douglas Mendonca, 48, was released from the hospital Tuesday and booked into Stanislaus County Jail on felony charges of stalking and evading a peace officer.

The incident began shortly before 10 p.m. Friday when the Turlock Police Department received a report that Mendonca had showed up at his ex-girlfriend’s residence on Wayside Drive and was in violation of a restraining order. Mendonca had been released from jail two days prior for violating the same restraining order, according to the police report.

Officers spotted Mendonca in the area of Hawkeye Avenue and Palm Street and attempted to pull him over, but he sped off instead.

The high speed pursuit continued on to Denair Avenue, Canal Drive, and finally Golden State Boulevard, before Mendonca lost control and crashed into a metal pole. According to the police report, Mendonca was driving recklessly and with the headlights off.

Mendonca was hospitalized with injuries from the crash for three days.
