A reckless driver led Turlock Police officers on a vehicle and foot pursuit before he was able to escape being apprehended.

The incident began around 1 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Lander and Bernell avenues when a Turlock Police officer spotted a white Jeep Cherokee being driven recklessly, said police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped off and a pursuit ensued.

The driver made his way to the 700 block of Angelus Street, where he abandoned the vehicle and took off running on foot, with the officer chasing after him.

The suspect jumped over several fences and took a route that led him back to the Jeep Cherokee. He got back into the vehicle and sped away again.

Officers continued to pursue after the suspect as the chase wound its way through residential neighborhoods, with the suspect driving at speeds around 50 mph, Lewis said.

The suspect again abandoned the vehicle in the 500 block of Vermont Avenue and ran off on foot. A perimeter was established around the area and a K-9 unit from the Ceres Police Department was called in, but law enforcement were unable to locate the suspect.
