Stanislaus County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating a shooting that left two men dead and a Turlock woman critically injured with a gunshot wound.

Investigators said the shooting was a murder-suicide, and they are trying to determine the motive.

Around 7 p.m. Saturday the sheriff’s dispatch received a call from a man, later identified as Mario Martinez of Keyes, who stated he had just shot two people in the area of Kilburn Road and Villamanucha Road in Crowslanding. The man then hung up the phone, the sheriff’s department reported.

The first deputies to arrive at the scene found two cars alongside the shoulder of Kilburn Road. Next to the vehicles were two men with gunshot wounds to their upper body. Emergency medical responders declared the two men deceased at the scene. They have been identified as Mario Martinez and Mario Medina of Modesto, according to the sheriff’s department.

In one of the vehicles deputies found Maricela Martinez of Turlock with a gunshot wound to her upper body. She was still alive when deputies arrived and she was rushed to a hospital and is expected to survive her injuries, the sheriff’s department reported.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Mario Martinez shot both Maricela Martinez and Mario Medina before killing himself. Stanislaus County court records indicate Mario Martinez and Maricela Martinez were married until November 2014, when Maricela Martinez filed for divorce.

It is not yet known how all three ended up alongside Kilburn Road.
