Over 23 local students moved one step closer to pursing their lifetime careers in the agriculture business on Monday with the help of the Turlock Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee.
“In these challenging economic times, providing these scholarships to aspiring students is an important investment in our local agricultural-based economy,” said Greg Eisenhauer, 2010 chairman of the Ag Scholarship Committee.
Each scholarship recipient stood up in front of over 350 industry supporters, family and community members at the 10th Annual Ag Scholarship Luncheon on Monday and related their plans for the future.
“It’s important that our many donators and sponsors hear for themselves how important their contributions are to the kids,” Eisenhauer said.
There were three recipients from Turlock High School, four from Pitman High, one from Turlock Christian, four from Denair High School, seven from Hilmar High School, two from Livingston High School, two from Hughson High School and one from California State University, Stanislaus.
The Turlock Chamber of Commerce gave out over $20,000 in scholarships this year, reaching over $123,050 donated in scholarships in the past 10 years. Scholarships given on Monday ranged from $500 to $2,000.
Two scholarship recipients from previous years talked about their success in the agricultural field and how it started with the help of the Turlock Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Agriculture Scholarships Luncheon.
Rachel Medeiros, a 2001 scholarship recipient from Denair talked about earning an Agriculture Business degree from Cal Poly and her present agricultural career at Monsanto. Samantha Rosa — the first scholarship recipient from California State University, Stanislaus in 2008 — spoke about her current work on a Master’s degree.
The Chamber Ag Committee’s work on local agricultural education activities was also highlighted at Monday’s event. The committee has donated over $61,000 for activities including the 4-H Farmyard Experience at the Stanislaus County Fair.
“The success of the luncheon is a tribute to the outstanding support of area businesses and loyal sponsors that participate year after year and who believe that the future of agriculture lies in the hands of our youth,” said Sharon Silva, chief executive officer of the Turlock Chamber of Commerce.
The Turlock Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee scholarship program is designed to interest and encourage young people to enter into the agricultural industry. The committee is aimed at developing future agricultural leaders, educate the public and inform policy makers about agricultural issues.
Recipients for this year’s scholarship program are Dominic Agresti-Assali, Monica Soares, Dylan Linhares, Aubree Atwood, Ethan Alvares, Johnathan Rodriguez, Brittney Thomas, Natalie Sanders, Craig Miller, Kayla Sweeten, Stacy Ann Silva, Devin Baptista, Vanessa Martins, Monica Alcala, Jacqueline Jones, Richelle Borrelli, Stacy Cordova, Joshua Medeiros, Collin Abraham, Fidel Castro, Ryan Garcia, Zach Baptista and Jacob Cardoza.
