Artists enter their best in spring show
“Drops on Pink” by Jennifer Laughlin won third place in the Drawing and Graphics category.
The Turlock City Arts Commission’s 28th Spring Juried Art show opened at the Turlock Gallery on March 8. The 43 exhibited works will be displayed at Turlock City Hall until May 27, the day of the reception.
105 works of art were entered in the Turlock Spring Juried Art show. Entry categories included acrylic and oil painting, drawing and graphic arts, photography, 3-dimensional, water color, and mixed media. Awards were given for the top three entries and honorable mention in every category.
The best of show winner for 2010 was a black and white watercolor titled “Man with Baby” by William Harris.
“I was in love with the Best in Show when it first came in,” said Arts Commissioner Candy Klaschus, who helped organize the Spring Juried Art Show.
Klaschus said that this year’s show was advertised by e-mail and word of mouth to potential entrants. The Turlock Arts Commission received at least a $15 donation for each piece that was entered in the show. They also retain 25 percent of the purchase price for all pieces sold at the show. The Best in Show piece is for sale for $3,000.
The Spring Juried Art show is an annual event organized by the Turlock City Arts Commission. Artists age 18 and over from Stanislaus and surrounding counties can enter two of their best new works of art. All entries are less than two years old, and have never been shown in the Turlock City Art Gallery before.
All pieces will hang until May 25, when they will be released after a reception for the artists. The reception will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 25, with an awards presentation at 6:30 p.m. The Arts Commission has not voted yet on whether there will be prize money awarded to the winners in each category.
“For the late start we got this year, we have quite a few artists represented in the show. I’m happy with how it turned out,” Klaschus said.
