The Turlock City Arts Commission is now taking submissions for their 29th annual Spring Juried Arts Show and Sale. Independent judges will select the best pieces to display in the Turlock City Hall Gallery and award prizes to the winners. A new prize, the Ornament Award, will be selected by commissioners and the winner will have his or her artwork featured on Christmas ornaments sold by the commission.

“We’d like to see a lot of entries this year, and get as many people in the show as possible,” said Arts commissioner Larry DeTomasi.

The show is open to artists 18 years or older who live in Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Merced, Madera, Tuolumne, Calaveras and Mariposa counties. Art will be accepted in six categories: acrylic and oil painting, drawing and graphic arts, mixed media, photography, 3 dimensional, and water color.

Prizes will be awarded for the best of show, first, second, third and honorable mention in each category. DeTomasi said that the amount of cash prizes depends on sponsorship for the event.  The annual Artel award will also be presented to a selected artist. The ornament award, which is new this year, will be selected by the arts commissioners. The winning artists will have their work featured on a Christmas ornament, which will be sold to raise funds for the Turlock City Arts Commission.

“I think what sets this award apart is that it’s chosen by the commissioners. It’s really about what we like. We want this ornament to be a memento of the Spring Juried Arts Show, which is our biggest show of the year,” Arts commissioner Alex Cantatore said.

The fundraising ornaments will be sold closer to the holiday season to raise money for the arts commission, which currently does not receive public funding. The Arts Commission also retains a 25 percent donation from the selling price of any piece that is sold during the show, so the event is a possible fundraiser for the commission.

Selected works and winners will be displayed in the City Gallery at City Hall from March 1 to May 10. There will be a public reception for the artists at 6:30 p.m. on May 10. The Turlock Arts Commission is seeking sponsors for awards. Interested sponsors can call the Turlock Recreation Department at 668-5594.

Pre-registration for entries is now open. The entry fee is $15 per artwork, or $25 for the maximum two pieces. Registration forms are available at the Turlock Recreation office or online at the arts commission website, under the “special events” tab. Registration on receiving dates will cost $20 per piece of art.

All entered works must be hand delivered on Feb. 25 or Feb. 26 to the City Gallery in Turlock City Hall, 156 S. Broadway. For full rules and registration information visit www.turlock.ca.us or stop by the Recreation department at 301 Starr Ave., in Turlock.
