A Hilmar woman and a young girl were killed in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 165 in Hilmar.
The mother and daughter were identified as Melanie Valdez, 42, of Hilmar and Khloie Valdez, 9, of Hilmar.
Neither of them was wearing seatbelts according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision happened around 11 a.m. May 8 on Highway 165, south of Westside Boulevard.
Melanie Valdez was driving a 2006 Kia Rio northbound on Highway 165 at an undetermined speed when she attempted to make a right turn.
According to the CHP, she travelled off the right shoulder, where she lost control of the car. It veered into the southbound lane where it struck a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado.
The front of the Silverado hit the right rear of the Kia, causing it to spin out of control.
The CHP said the mother and daughter were not wearing the seatbelts and both were ejected from the vehicle. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the Silverado a 32-year-old Modesto man and his four passengers were taken to a Modesto hospital with minor injuries.
A GoFundMe account to help pay for expenses was established by Rebecca Valdez, the daughter of Melanie and the sister of Khloie.
“These sweet angels were so full of life,” Rebecca Valdez wrote. “My mom was always somebody that anyone could call if they needed help and she would be there, didn't matter who or what it was. My sister who loved animals and loved to sing. She was so sensitive and loving and had so much life to live.”
The collision remains under investigation.
