A Turlock man was killed in a solo vehicle collision in Patterson on Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The deceased was identified as Jason Vargas, 25, of Turlock.

The collision was reported to the CHP at 2:55 a.m. Wednesday on Las Palmas Avenue, east of Elm Avenue.

Vargas was driving a 2003 Buick Century eastbound on Las Palmas at an undetermined speed.

The CHP said he lost control of the vehicle and it veered to the left off the road. The front of the vehicle collided with a tree and came to a rest.

The first emergency responders to arrive at the scene found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames and Vargas next to the vehicle on the shoulder of the road. Vargas was unresponsive and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The CHP said Vargas was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing.
