Lengthy investigation leads to arrest in nonprofit theft
crime

A Hughson woman was arrested last week following a several month investigation regarding theft from non-profit organizations in the area.

Oakdale Police on Oct. 19 reported the arrest of Lana Casey, 60, of Hughson on suspicion of stealing nearly $200,000 from several non-profit foundations in Oakdale. Casey was the chairperson of the 2022 Divas on Broadway event held in Turlock in February that benefitted the Turlock Salvation Army. It is unclear if that event was part of the investigation.

In June, the Oakdale Investigations Unit was alerted to the thefts by several board members who discovered that money was missing from their foundation’s accounts.

Oakdale PD investigators determined that Casey, who served as a board member and signer for the non-profits, was behind the thefts. Oakdale investigators issued a search warrant for Casey’s bank accounts and discovered that dozens of checks from the organizations were deposited to her account.

Casey was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of embezzlement and grand theft. Investigators believe Casey may have assisted in other similar thefts of organizations in the area.
